Chuck Yeager
Before he flew faster than the speed of sound, Chuck Yeager made
a name for himself as a double ace of World War II. Flying for
the Eighth Air Force out of England, Yeager shot down 13 enemy
planes and earned two Silver Stars, seven Air Medals and the
Purple Heart. In March 1944, during his ninth combat mission,
Yeager was shot down over German-occupied France. In a daring
escape, he slipped through the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain,
finally finding his way back into action in England.
Chuck Yeager's gained his greatest fame, however, in his
transsonic flights in the Bell X-1. Hear Yeager describe this
record-breaking jet.
Beautiful little airplane
Pushing the envelope
Making a difference
